This is the key position of the Site Leadership Team in the Environmental, Health, Safety & Sustainability area of expertise, but also includes responsibilities for Facilities. The primary objective of the role is to protect and enhance the safety of our employees and our Site environmental sustainability through prevention, fostering a culture of caring where the function is ingrained as a core value, achieving world class performance. The position ensures compliance of all EHS&S/F aspects of the Site and sets local strategies for overall success in alignment with corporate policy and common practices.
In addition to overall input to corporate and Site EHS&S initiatives, strategies, programs and procedures, responsibilities include supporting factory via hands on counsel, supervision, assessment and implementation of :
Culture – leads/fosters/develops a caring culture aligned with leadership anchors, as a core value with all employees, everyone believing that zero is achievable, everyone is actively engaged in performing their work in a safely, everyone actively interacts with co-workers to prevent at-risk behaviors. Actively participates on Site Leadership Team and effectively coaches and develops operations line supervision to be effective leaders/coaches in their respective positions.
EHS&S Performance – Partners with Site leadership team to develop Site EHS&S Key Priorities, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to drive performance improvement. Ensures these are aligned with Corporate Strategies, Programs and Plans with the objective of sustainable World Class performance.
Compliance – Ensure Site maintains continuous “audit ready” level of compliance with company policies and procedures as well as all applicable external regulatory requirements German Regulations. Responsible to create and ensure implementation of necessary systems, processes and procedures, including management of change.
EHS&S Strategies, Programs and Plans - Develops programs, systems and processes, including training and coaching to establish clear procedures on EHS&S measures and precautions. Drives effective, and sustainable implementation initiatives, strategies, programs and procedures, responsibilities via hands on leadership, coaching and team work.
Risk Assessment and Elimination - Leads the effective implementation and utilization of risk assessment and risk prediction processes to ensure effective identification and mitigating of hazards. Ensures investigation of all incidents to drive to root cause and identify actions to prevent recurrence.
Capability Building – Develops talent through active support, coaching and feedback with the goal of elevating the talent, and supporting succession planning. Leads development of EHS&S capabilities of all employees and contractors through effective content development and delivery of training.
Systems and tools –Works through established systems, applies related tools. Knowledge of ISO Management System certification (ISO 14001 and ISO 45001). Effectively coach and utilize Total Production Management/LEAN based tools, systems and process to enhance overall performance.
Cross functional and technical expertise support – Provides technical expertise/coaching as needed in all areas and initiatives of the function. Partners with other key functions on initiatives including Engineering, Operations, HR, Quality, to deliver on goals and plans.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
Review plans and specifications for construction or installation of building and new equipment to ensure that all safe-workplace requirements have been met.
Implement a strategy that effectively utilizes proactive (preventive and predictive) maintenance/EHS techniques and performance monitoring to detect early degradation and employ timely solution to prevent failure.
Inspect facilities, machinery and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards and to ensure regulation compliance.
Assess ergonomic conditions and environment to reduce incidence of muscular-skeletal conditions.
Coach and serve as mentor for the site-level associates.
Coordinate daily management of EHS activities across the site. Be a champion of driving improvements and ensuring sustainment. Maintain and develop standard work to support site operations.
Support DBS tools and build certified practitioners within the facilities. Lead kaizen events to drive improvements.
Develop, implements and coordinate all Fire Prevention/Protection programs coordinating with FM Global. This includes all required training, recordkeeping, monitoring and reporting programs and results.
Support lead and create a strategic plan for management of all facilities such as Janitorial, HVAC/HEAT, electrical, plumbing
Other duties as assigned
Bachelor's degree in Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or other applicable field.
5+ years EHS&S experience, including work in manufacturing operations and product engineering/R&D. Experience in Life Sciences industry and laboratory operations preferred.
3+ years’ experience in Facilities (Corporate building/functions support) .
Previous leadership or management experience.
Strong understanding of all applicable local, state and federal regulations (EU)
Property, project and or new construction management experience.
Contractor Management experience
Experience driving projects and leading data using lean and six sigma tools such as problem-solving, value stream mapping, and kaizen events.
Demonstrated experience in all EU required programs
English Fluency required
Must be capable of working in a fast-paced environment with minimal direct supervision and have strong demonstrated leadership, interpersonal, and self-initiative skills.
Demonstrated ability to drive sustainable organizational change.
Demonstrated ability to build strong cross-functional teams capable of delivering results.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and influence across a diverse range of people from Corporate leadership to a factory floor associate.
Demonstrated ability to think both strategically and tactically and quickly transition between the two.
Good technical understanding of EHS&S issues and their relationship to production/engineering/R&D and Laboratory and job functions as it relates to building in prevention.
Strong demonstrated verbal / written communications, analytical and problem solving skills. Must be detailed and results oriented.
Ability to communicate complex regulatory and technical issues in lay terms.
Ability to achieve results through dotted line situations
Proficiency with Windows based applications including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Ability to master other specialized software.
Must be bilingual in German and English.
Supervision Given : Factory EHS&S leader provides direct leadership, guidance and coaching to the Factory EHS&S staff and is responsible for developing the capabilities of this team. Additionally, incumbent must have the tact and technical, strategic, communications and motivational managerial skills to achieve desired results from those with whom an “authority” relationship would be ambiguous.
Supervision Received : Factory EHS&S Leader receives direct supervision, guidance and coaching from the Corporate Global Leadership team. Indirect guidance and coaching is received by Site Leader. Many working parameters dictated by situations. Independent direction on initiative work.
