Cepheid, a leading molecular diagnostics company with an R&D Center of Excellence in Bothell, Washington, is seeking an Enzymologist or Biochemist at the Scientist/Senior Scientist level who is motivated to play a key role in developing new core technologies in biochemistry innovation and analytics!

The successful candidate is a hands-on enzymology specialist, supplying and implementing solutions for the development and analysis of new and existing protein reagents for cutting-edge nucleic acid amplification and detection technologies. The position is an opportunity to engage and collaborate with teams from different areas of R&D and production. The candidate will also support efforts in troubleshooting investigations and sustainability projects to maintain the high quality standards of Cepheid’s diagnostic products and their competitiveness on the market.

Essential job responsibilities:

Develop, validate and perform assays to assess biochemical and enzymatic properties of protein reagents in variety of formulations and conditions

Design, express and purify recombinant protein reagents from bacterial expression systems

Critically evaluate and provide support for new and existing protein reagents development, sustainability and troubleshooting projects

Play a leading role in feasibility studies, concept reviews and DOE

Independently perform projects from pre-feasibility studies to completion with minimal oversight, coordinating all vital resources

Design, execute and analyze results of experiments both independently and in collaboration with team members and other stakeholders

Drive innovation by investigating and providing solutions in biochemistry which are compatible with engineering aspects of Cepheid’s diagnostics platforms

Provide advanced hands-on expertise, mentoring and training in ground breaking molecular biology, protein biochemistry techniques and data analysis

Prepare reports in MS Power Point, MS Word and other formats

Present results of the work within and outside of the company

Provide SOPs and ensure QC support for the reagents production, development and research

Work in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams across Cepheid sites to support different aspects of New Product Development and sustainability programs

Ensure and adhere to GLP compliance and maintain a clean, traceable and safe work environment with accurate record keeping


Education and Experience (in years):

Bachelor's degree in Enzymology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or other relevant fields and 5+ years of corresponding experience OR Master's degree with 3+ years of related work experience OR PhD with experience in corresponding field.

Knowledge and skills:

  • Validated knowledge of protein and nucleic acid biochemistry

  • Experience in enzyme kinetics

  • Experience in nucleic acid and protein purification and quantitation

  • Experience in protein engineering

  • Knowledge of biochemical laboratory environment and standard lab procedures

  • Biological and chemical safety practices and procedures awareness

  • Ability to perform primary job duties independently

  • Good oral and written communication skills

  • Ability to work in highly collaborative manner with multiple teams, team members and customers

  • Ability to work under GLP/GMP guidelines and maintain a clean and safe working environment

Physical requirements/abilities:

  • Ability to work in the lab and office environment

  • Travel several times per year

Preferred requirements:

  • PhD in Enzymology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or other relevant fields and extensive relevant industry experience

  • Industrial experience with DNA polymerases and Reverse Transcriptases in production, analysis and implementation

  • Education in molecular biology with expertise in nucleic acid amplification and detection techniques such as multiplex RT-PCR, isothermal amplification, etc.

  • Familiarity with different protein expression systems

  • Experience in molecular evolution techniques

  • Experience in recombinant protein mutagenesis to modify properties of enzymes

  • Experience of HTS method development for enzyme properties assessment

  • Experience in nucleic acid aptamers research

  • Experience in non-canonical and non-natural nucleic acid chemistries

Physical Demands

Must be able to perform routine laboratory tasks

As part of Cepheid’s Biosafety and Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan, any associate who will be working with biohazardous materials, or those who are required to work where others are using biohazardous materials, will be required to show proof of Hepatitis B Vaccination and pass a biosafety training series. For associates who are not vaccinated at time of hire, Cepheid will schedule Hepatitis B vaccination with our occupational health clinic at Cepheid’s expense. The employee will be allowed to enter the labs following the first vaccine dose.

Lab work is a core element of the Scientist I, Innovation position; any person hired must either have proof of Hepatitis B vaccination or plan on being vaccinated at Cepheid’s expense. There may be other vaccines as required.
