We are currently seeking a GM of Japan who will be responsible for driving and growing the business for Molecular Devices in Japan
What we’ll get you doing:
The General Manager of Japan will be responsible for driving and growing the business for Molecular Devices in Japan. S/he will have complete P&L responsibility for the business including putting together the business strategy, identifying future growth opportunities by evaluating organic and inorganic opportunities, driving and supporting the sales strategy, and attracting and hiring a winning commercial team. S/he will act as an ambassador for the Company and interact with the external environment and with colleagues and peers worldwide.
The General Manager of Japan will report to the Vice President of Asia Pacific. With a high Internal fill rate of 75 % at senior levels, the incumbent will have opportunities to grow within Japan across the Danaher operating companies or globally within Molecular Devices/Danaher. Danaher has a strong focus on developing internal talent to take on future and larger responsibilities. The priorities for the role include:
Developing and implementing a strategic business plan that ensures profitable revenue growth: The candidate will be responsible for overall revenue generation and cost optimization for The Company. S/he will need to develop the strategy for the company’s operations, ensuring that the business continues to enjoy superior growth rates of both top and bottom line by capturing new business opportunities and working towards building a leading market share in Japan. One of the key tasks for the position will be to assist the product innovation and roadmap strategies and provide Voice of Customer. As the face of the Molecular Devices in Japan, the candidate will represent the company towards regional institutions, organizations and authorities to make them familiar with The Company and partner with them in the growth path.
Managing & developing the sales growth strategy: The candidate will be responsible for managing, developing and growing the regional sales channels (distributors), and outbound marketing initiatives in order to increase market share in Japan. Developing direct strategy for customer relationship and focus on customer satisfaction will also be critical to the successful growth strategy. It is expected that the General Manager, Japan will drive growth at over 2X the market growth rate by implementing effective sales programs for all products and services while leveraging strategic pricing.
Building and Managing the organizational foundation: It will be imperative for the candidate to continue to build the local organisation structure, by hiring, training and developing highly motivated employees as the business grows. S/he will foster a team based, customer oriented and result driven culture. In developing local employees, the candidate will also groom and develop a second line of executives and be able to attract and pull talented people to the team. S/he will ensure that the teams are kept together, engaged and motivated to achieve long lasting and strong performance. The candidate will also lead legal, technical and ethical compliance for The Company.
Driving and maintaining relationships internally and externally: The General Manager, Japan will be required to build, sustain and grow significant internal and external relationships. S/he will need to partner across Molecular Devices’ senior leadership teams, (Commercial teams, Service, Finance, Operations, Logistics, Product Development and HR) to develop and execute the Japan operations plan and strategy. In addition, the candidate will be expected to drive external relationships with dealers, distributors, large key accounts and government organisations. S/he will engage product specialists from Molecular Devices’ Product Management team, colleagues from Marketing and Communications, and other internal resources, to ensure customers are well informed about Molecular Devices’s products and the Company’s sales associates have the appropriate tools and training.
Driving and maintain the deployment of DBS – Danaher Business Systems: Continuous improvement is our way of life and DBS adoption and deployment provides the resources and tools to manage execution of improvement initiatives.
The essential requirements of the role include:
The Company is looking to hire a technically proficient individual with credibility and stature as the General Manager, Japan. The individual should have ideally worked in Life Sciences/Medical Devices/ Healthcare and should possess a strong performance record. The individual should have good operational experience with hands on experience in running the commercial operations. Experience in selling through channel distribution and direct selling would be highly valued. S/he should have had at least five years of management experience, ideally including P&L responsibility, and a demonstrable record of delivering significant success in that role. S/he should have good understanding of product launch and product commercialization processes.

Ability and thought leadership to think ahead and maintain a strategic positioning for the business. Prepare the organisation for internal and external changes, competitive challenges and respond to opportunities and threats in a proactive and timely manner. Defining and articulating business strategies based on mapping customer needs, the product/service portfolio and market dynamics. Ability to anticipate future business trends, technology development and market expectations and translate them into new business opportunities.

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
Demonstrated leadership qualities - with focus on human resource and organization development, performance management, and sales management.
Experience in providing proactive, positive coaching and development to the commercial team
Experience working with global, multi-national firms is preferred
