Beckman Coulter Life Sciences (www.beckman.com), an operating company of Danaher Corporation, is seeking a Patent Attorney or Patent Agent for its Indianapolis, IN office. The Patent Attorney or Patent Agent will be an integral part of the Company’s in-house legal department reporting directly to Senior Counsel Intellectual Property and supporting the creation of intellectual property insights for new products and into competitors.
As the Patent Attorney or Patent Agent You Will:
Strategically and independently perform patent searches relating to patentability (novelty), validity, freedom-to-operate and infringement in the Life Sciences, which may include research workflows, systems, reagents & various biologic or physical sciences technical areas.
Manage outside search vendors for additional search capacity or to leverage additional technical expertise.
Conduct patent landscape studies to identify trends in a technology field, deliver competitive intelligence and identify potential product development and licensing opportunities.
Perform qualitative analysis of patents and patent portfolios from a legal, technical and business perspective in collaboration with IP legal team.
Communicate effectively to determine the scope of searches and Create visual presentations communicating patent analysis findings.
Patent portfolio management, including patent preparation and prosecution and direction of outside counsel globally.
Portfolio to Product mapping and strategic positioning of IP.
Bachelor's Degree, in a Biological, Chemical, other Physical Science, or Engineering, Advanced degree preferred.
Expertise in Life Sciences technologies, technical experience in cytometry or cell culture/bioprocess or lab automation is a plus. Applicants with strong technical qualifications encouraged to apply.
Attorney applicants must have JD and a state bar and USPTO license to practice with one or more years’ experience in patent prosecution.
Agent applicants must have three or more years’ experience in patent prosecution and USPTO license to practice.
Patent preparation and prosecution experience including PCT, EPO or other global is a plus.
Skilled in developing patent search methodology and in conducting searches. Experience in literature and technology searching is a plus.
Demonstrated ability to translate complex information to simpler form and communicate for understanding to requesting customer.
