The Senior Manager (or Senior Staff), Business Development and Open Innovation is responsible for supporting Beckman Coulter Life Science strategy and business development activities. The Senior Manager partners with cross-functional teams, including business units, sales, R&D, legal, IP, operations, etc., as well as Danaher corporate teams, external advisors, and industry leaders with vision. The selected individual will source, cultivate, evaluate, and negotiate agreements with external innovation partners that help develop and/or advance the company’s strategy. S/he will lead market opportunity assessments and technology assessment for partnerships, investments and mergers & acquisitions (M&A) activities. In addition, you will partner with the business units and R&D to ensure definition and evolution of the Genomics technology roadmap for the Biotech business unit

Major Responsibilities:

Aligned with current and future product and business unit strategies, with an emphasis on Genomics related workflows and technologies, and in partnership with functional teams described above:

  • Build and maintain an ongoing funnel of potential acquisition (M&A) targets, and candidates for partnerships (open innovation)

  • Lead cultivation activities with potential M&A and open innovation partners

  • Assess market opportunities for new technologies, new partnership opportunities. Build investment cases and financial models for these

  • For open innovation opportunities, lead cross-functional teams through the process of creating robust business term sheets and contracts that work for both parties. Own the negotiation of such contracts

  • Conduct assessments of new emerging technologies/companies in the field of single cell multi-omics, dPCR, NGS+ synthetic biology, spatial genomics, long-read sequencing, etc

  • Lead existing portfolio of technology and intellectual property licenses to ensure appropriate maintenance (e.g. licensing renewals) are complete and on time/budget

  • Complete licensing deals required to enable FTO for new product development

  • Conduct regular analysis and communication of developing technology trends through literature revenues, key specialist relationships, and competitive analysis

  • Demonstrate the evolving Danaher Innovation and Open Innovation toolset (as part of the Danaher Business System) to build the innovation pipeline

Education, Background and Skill Requirements

  • Doctorate degree and 9+ years of relevant experience OR Master’s degree and 12 years of relevant experience OR Bachelor’s degree and 14 years of relevant experience

  • Strong understanding of customer workflows, issues, and improvement opportunities within the life science and/or in-vitro diagnostics, with an emphasis on Genomics related workflows and technologies

  • Strong prior experience in strategy, business development, and/or corporate development roles. Experience in strategic analysis, financial modelling and analysis, deal structuring, and deal negotiations for various types of business deals including but not limited to M&A, partnerships, technology licensing, distribution, and other types of open innovation activities

  • An ability to network/connect with key opinion leaders and other influencers in the fields of life science or in-vitro diagnostics to understand their workflows and what good looks like for products and service offerings in these industries

  • Ability to lead with influence across multiple levels/functions, develop strong internal and external networks, and work within a matrix structure

Location: Preferred location is Indianapolis, IN, but open to other tech hub cities, particularly the San Francisco Bay Area or Boston.

Travel: Approximately 40% travel is required.
