We are currently seeking a Staff Plastics Consumables Design Engineer to work in Indianapolis with a multidisciplinary team of engineers, scientists, and supply chain professionals. The scope of this position will be to conceive, design, prototype, test, verify, validate, set up manufacturing, launch, and support the sustainment of plastic consumables for new and existing products in the research and IVD life science markets of automation, particle characterization, and centrifugation.

Responsibilities * Leads and participates in cross-functional project teams, interfacing with internal departments such as product development, marketing, service/support, value engineering, quality, regulatory, manufacturing, and procurement. * Participates in the creation and review of the strategy for all consumables. * Leads the delivery of specifications and directions to team members, suppliers, outside consultants and development partners. * Leads the analysis, evaluation and planning for methods of approach for consumables design and manufacturing, and organizes means to achieve the solution to highly complex problems. * Creates design concepts and/or provides review feedback to engineering for new consumables based onuserneeds from external customers and application scientists. * Designs and leads the testing or investigations pertaining to issues with new and existing consumables * Establish working relationships with vendors for outsourcing of engineering services, materials supply, injection molding tool design, and contract manufacturing of consumables components. * Ideate and design or collaborate on consumable fixture and assembly designs and inspection equipment.

* Job duties also include prototyping, feasibility testing, verification testing, and creation of validation protocol documents in compliance with company, ISO, & IVD/FDA standards

* A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering required with M.S. degree in related field is a plus. * 10 years of related work experience understanding and choosing polymer materials and the establishing structural failure criteria, designing plastic products, conducting structural (ANSYS preferred) and mold-flow analyses (Moldflow® preferred), designing for manufacturing (DFM), working with automated statistical process control systems, and engineering tooling. * Experience working with injection molding, injection and extrusion blow molding required. * Expereince with roto-molding, thermoforming, Liquid Silicone Rubber molding, castings, and structural foam molding are desirable. * Experience with all forms of high volume plastic part assembly technologies, including and not limited to – ultrasonic welding, thermo-sealing, laminating, laser welding, staking, adhesive bonding and over-molding. The candidate will have consulted on, or ideally developed, high volume, automated assembly and testing equipment desired. * Will have launched several successful plastic consumable part designs. * Ability and willingness to travel to local, domestic, and international locations approximately 10%. * Ability to problem solve - both defining the problem and ability to demonstrate solutions compatible with business objectives. * Excellent communication skills (written and spoken) Proficiency with SolidWorks and Microsoft Office applications. Desirable Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience * Experience developing products in an ISO life sciences and regulated (CE-IVD, FDA) diagnostic environment. * Experience with technologies to control wetting or controlling the hydrophobic and hydrophilic properties of plastic surfaces is desirable. * Experience developing manufacturing solutions or strategies to achievethin-walled (0.005” – 0.010”) and/or tight tolerance injection molded features and selecting plastic resins that can support different chemistries.

* Experience using Minitab or equivalent software, design of experiments, and scientific process development techniques.
