The Research Scientist III will independently conduct bench scientific experimentation that advances the basic science of nucleic acids and nucleic acid biochemistry and assists with development and characterization of new IDT genomics products in NGS, qPCR and gene editing.

This position is part of the Enzyme Evolution group in our Molecular Genetics division located in Coralville, IA.

Essential Functions:

  • Design, execute, and troubleshoot protein engineering workflows to optimize the properties of various enzymes for gene editing, qPCR and NGS applications.

  • Design and construction of diverse mutagenesis libraries in a variety of techniques.

  • Recombinant protein expression and purification using standard AKTA chromatography.

  • Characterize activity and specificity of mutant enzymes.

  • Present scientific work in internal meetings and scientific conferences.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (in Biology, Genetics, Chemistry or a related life sciences field) with six or more years relevant lab experience required OR

  • Master’s degree (in Biology, Genetics, Chemistry or a related life sciences field) with four or more years relevant lab experience preferred

  • PhD degree (in Biology, Genetics, Chemistry or a related life sciences field) with one or more years relevant lab experience preferred

Professional Experience:

  • Standard molecular biology experience or protein biochemistry experience required

  • Experience with the development of genomics applications in NGS, qPCR or gene editing techniques strongly preferred.

  • Experience with protein engineering and high-throughput screening strongly preferred.

  • Experience with structural biology preferred.

  • Experience with public speaking and publishing scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals strongly preferred.

  • Extensive knowledge of IDT products and product lines preferred.

  • Ability to multitask and maintain several projects at one time.

  • Ability to communicate with peers and all levels of management.

  • Ability to maintain both a high standard of courtesy and cooperation in dealing with co-workers.

Travel Requirements

  • Occasional travel (up to 20%) is expected.
