The Senior Development Scientist - Microbiology is responsible for the development and execution of new product designs, processes, feasibility studies, scale-up experiments, technology transfer to production, and process/product validation activities. The position includes laboratory and desk roles to develop complex diagnostic laboratory workflows for multiple R&D programs in microbiology, ensuring that product performance and regulatory requirements are demonstrated through the planning, execution, and data management of studies.
The role will be responsible for the creation and documentation of detailed product specifications and instructions for product use in clinical microbiology laboratories employing diagnostic procedures including antibiotic susceptibility testing and microbial identification.
This position belongs to Microbiology Operating Company nested within Beckman Coulter and is located in West Sacramento. At Microbiology, our vision is to ensure we that every patient has access to the right antibiotic at the right time as one of the leading ID/AST companies. You will be an integral part of the Research and Development team and report to the Sr Manager, Development Science.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
Design and develop complex antimicrobial assays and sample preparation methods consisting of reagents, consumables, and instrumentation with clinical bacterial and yeast specimens to produce best in class Antibiotic Susceptibility Tests for Beckman Coulter’s Microbiology systems.
Evaluate current and emerging technologies and protocols used within clinical laboratories and guide product development activities to align with strategic business and project objectives.
Work cross-functionally and collaborate frequently with Research and Development departments, Operations, Supply Chain/Procurement, Quality, Regulatory, and Marketing; additionally, working cross-site and with outside partners in other time zones will be equally important in achieving maximum impact.
Routinely communicate and present on detailed experimental plans and studies, project status, requirements, gaps, and countermeasures to project core teams and the leadership team.
Develop and maintain detailed experimental protocols and quality documentation; collaborate with team members to assure common understanding of the development process and project goals.
Foster and develop collaborative relationships with clinical customers to support evaluation of internally developed workflows and actively participate in standard setting organizations (e.g. Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute) to understand and influence emerging trends in antibiotic research and companion diagnostic testing.
The essential requirements of the job include:
PhD in a Life Science discipline such as Microbiology or a related field with 2+ years of proven experience or a master’s degree with 5+ years of experience.
Work experience should include a minimum 5, preference 7+ years in direct laboratory bench experience with proven track record of scientific accomplishments and publications.
Competency with advanced statistical methods and programs (JMP, SAS, R) necessary for scientific data analysis and interpretation including DOE or equivalent experience.
Strong time management and scientific leadership skills and the ability to influence others without direct authority.
Ability to travel (domestic and internationally)-likely 5-10% of time.
It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
ISO and FDA regulated environment experience
Danaher Business System/Lean/Kaizen/6-sigma
Knowledge of microscopy techniques and experience with image analysis methods/software
Experience with laboratory practices used in handling medically relevant bacteria and yeast species
