The R&D Chemist III works with a small team of chemists and cross-functional teams to research, develop, design, modify, test and prepare chemical products and product applications. This position works to solve complex problems within the chemistry team and takes a new perspective using existing solutions. Continuous improvement mindset and attitude. with little supervision and guidance for use with Hach's systems for analysis. Working in cross-functional teams (typically only one chemist); brainstorm, problem-solving; working with production/manufacturing.


  • A Chemist III, R & D uses recognized, expert skill in developing new chemical methods of analysis for use on Hach instrumentation through independent research. Actively demonstrates expert level knowledge of a wide range of analytical techniques, methods, chemical principles, and laboratory practices during the development of new analysis products.

  • Drives and maintains safe working environments.

  • Exhibits solid practical experience while working closely with marketing in commercialization of new/modified product or application launches.

  • Develops and generates formularies and quality control procedures for new and modified test reagents with minimal supervision.

  • Provides direction to other chemists, engineering, and operations regarding chemical aspects of design and manufacturing.

  • Supervises chemistry technicians or interns.

  • Prepares calibrations for Hach chemistries for use on Hach instrumentation.

  • Writes summary reports of development work completed to keep company personnel informed of project status.

  • Reviews technical journals and competitive literature to maintain company competitiveness.

  • Demonstrates teaching level experience in assisting manufacturing associates with chemistry-related items to facilitate production efficiency.

  • Has the ability to translate market understanding into applications projects and determine impact on original design of product.


  • Develops the deadlines, projects, and work to be done in consultation with the supervisor. Determines the approach to be taken and the methodology to be used. Keeps the supervisor informed of progress, potentially controversial matters, or far-reaching implications. Completed work is generally reviewed only from an overall standpoint in terms of feasibility, compatibility with other work and departments (e.g. engineering design), or effectiveness in meeting requirements or expected results.

  • Uses initiative and resourcefulness in deviating from traditional methods, such as those found in the literature.

  • Uses DOE and statistical analysis as needed.

  • Combines varied duties requiring many different and unrelated processes and methods, such as those relating to well-established aspects of a scientific or engineering field.

  • Establishes criteria; formulates projects; assesses program effectiveness; or investigates or analyzes a variety of unusual conditions, problems, or questions.

  • Establishes personal contacts with individuals or groups from inside and outside Hach in a moderately unstructured setting, with a purpose to plan, coordinate, or advise on work efforts or to resolve operating problems by influencing or motivating individuals or groups

  • Provides chemistry knowledge to the project or business area of focus. The position includes demonstrating solid practical experience in adjacent scientific fields and methods.

  • Aids customers and Service Department to resolve analysis questions.

  • Adheres to the company’s Quality System, through proper use of departmental procedures.

  • Reviews project and calibration reports written by others, to ensure technical accuracy.

  • Supports and travels to key account and selected field sites to determine market applications and needs.

  • Provides information on strategic planning and technology evaluation as needed.

  • Writes chemical analysis procedures for incorporation into product formularies and controls.

  • Mentors junior scientists and engineers

  • Presents and/or publishes technical or application-focused papers, notes, poster sessions, seminars, etc. to aid in promotion of company’s technical image and to help promote company marketing efforts.

  • Follows guidelines such as department policies, hazardous materials regulations and procedures, experimental precedents, and work directions for application to specific cases or problems. Recommends changes, exceptions, or adaptations to these things as suitable to improve the safety, effectiveness and performance of the department or company.


  • Ph.D. with 0 years of post-graduate experience in chemistry, M.S. with 5 years of directly relevant industrial experience, or B.S. with 7 years of directly relevant experience.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in at least two areas of chemistry (e.g., analytical, organic, or inorganic).

  • Demonstrated ability in chemistry design, characterization, function testing, problem solving.

  • Clear ability to communicate and present and to communicate technical information to non-technical associates.

The salary range for this role is 71K - 100K. This is the range that we in good faith believe is the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and this range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in Colorado. This range may be modified in the future.

T his job is also eligible for bonus/incentive pay.
