Are you looking for an in-house IP Counsel role? Beckman Coulter is hiring for a Patent Counsel to be based out of our Indianapolis, IN or Loveland, CO office!
This role requires a positive attitude with collegial work style, responsive client-service, superior work ethic and personal accountability for delivering effective results. This position will have extensive interaction with Beckman R&D, Product Management and LS Legal Product Management to support all IP legal aspects of the organization.
This role reports to Senior Counsel IP for the support of Beckman Coulter Life Sciences activities in, for example, cytometry, genomics, integrated solutions, life sciences automated solutions, including systems, software and reagents products (www.beckman.com). Occasional domestic and international travel may be required in future.
Serves as trusted counsel on all IP issues (with a particular focus on patent intelligence, invention mining, patentability, patent prosecution, and freedom to operate), locally and globally, by giving solid and practical IP legal advice.
Partners effectively with relevant stakeholders at all levels of the global organization and across all phases of research, development & commercialization to provide clear, relevant business counseling aligned with compnay strategy.
Builds strategic, global, Intellectual Property portfolios to support business strategy.
Collaborates with Beckman Coulter Life Sciences Intellectual Property Team on high quality delivery of the above.
Advises and reviews confidentiality agreements and material transfer agreements.
Conducts clearance and diligence on emerging technology, new products, collaborations and strategic transactions.
Leads outside counsel in the preparation and prosecution of patent and trademark applications.
Chemistry, Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Biochemistry or other science bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited university. Advanced degree(s) or industry experience in life sciences is preferred.
2-5 years of relevant experience in either a law firm or as in-house counsel is required, depending on degree(s). Experience as in-house counsel is preferred.
Admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Active bar membership in at least one US jurisdiction. Juris Doctorate with excellent academic credentials from an accredited law school. Highly qualified Patent Agents will be considered.
Strong communication, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
Self-directed and proactive, comfortable executing on multiple projects independently and in collaboration with others.
Demonstrated high integrity and ethics in all dealings, non-political in conduct, while understanding internal and external dynamics.
