Role description

Group Leader, Engineering Biotech PASS for PALL Corporation to be based at Pune/Mumbai location to cater to PALL’s filtration, separation and purification systems.

Position : Group Leader, Engineering Biotech PASS

Location : Pune, India

Reportees : 3-4

Summary of the Role:

Leading, managing coaching and coordinating the PE/PM group as a fully integral part of the PE/PM organization.

Analyze customer process user requirements specification for engineered process equipment (including different technologies such as direct flow filtration, tangential flow filtration, chromatography etc.) used in the biopharmaceutical industry.As technical lead of a project team discuss, propose, define final engineered technical system solution with the customer including writing technical part of quotation and associated costing. After Order placement execute the proposed engineered system solution based on agreed and defined contractual specification together with a defined project team as sponsor, project manager or process engineer.

Make sure the projects are delivered in accordance to specification, on time and within budget.

Act as technical and managerial expert/coach and mentor within the team to develop the organization by coaching project managers and process engineers on their daily work and on critical technical questions which require specific knowledge and experience in this field

Take ownership of very complex technical tasks and issues.

Manage and Coordinated complex multi-unit operation solution projects

Specific Responsibilities that you would own:

Team management and people development (Time spent 20 %)

  • Chair/execute daily visual management

  • Ensure accuracy of financial and schedule reporting

  • Execute performance and development reviews in line with Danaher guidelines with team members

  • Execute operational talent assessment of team members.

  • Create action plan and drive implementation resulting from annual engagement survey.

  • Develop and maintain training plan

  • Lead regular 1.1 discussions with team members

  • Overall Recourse planning

Pre order Activities (Time spent 15 %)

  • Analyze Customer User Requirements specifications

  • Define technical solutions including analysis of process mass balance, equipment selection and sizing, drafting process and instrumentation diagrams.

  • Write technical proposals including clarification and exclusion lists.

  • Create project costing sheets including material and manpower costs

  • Request, analyze and implement quotations for all main sub suppliers and include in technical proposal

  • Develop Project schedules

  • Perform Project Risk assessments

  • Present and discuss technical solution with customer

  • General PASS capability presentations

  • Review technical proposals

  • Approve Leads in accordance with lead qualification process

  • Co-ordinate Quote creation off complex systems projects

  • Co-ordinate Quote creation for multiple unit operation solution projects

Project Execution (Time spent 35 %)

  • Contract review following customer order

  • SAP project creation and maintenance.

  • Develop Project Quality Plan

  • Complete basic design including process and instrumentation diagram, component lists and process functional specifications

  • Obtain valid quotations for all materials and initiate orders with procurement.

  • Cross functional communication, progress monitoring, coordination of sub supplier activities (e. g. mechanical fabricators, electrical Fabricators and software companies).

  • Progress monitoring, reporting and control

  • Financial status monitoring, reporting and control

  • Coordination of incoming goods inspection

  • Percent of completion (POC) cost analysis and POC SAP data maintenance.

  • Creation of technical documents and co-operate with Documentation team to assemble final technical documentation package.

  • Project management and co-ordination of Small and mid-size projects.

  • Project management and co-ordinate off complex systems projects

  • Project management and co-ordinate for multiple unit operation solution projects

  • Review and approval of design, verification and project management documents

Coaching and Training (Time spent 20 %)

  • On the job training for new team members

  • Execution of specific technical training topics

  • Mentoring and developing team members

  • Drive and Participate in Continuous improvement processes

General Administration (Time spent 10 %)

Specialized Activities



  • BSc/MSc or equivalent in Biotech engineering, Process engineering, chemical engineering or equivalent degree in science or pharmacy . A higher degree or secondary degree in a related above stream would be an advantage. Detailed knowledge of apertures, fittings, valves, measuring devices and electrical installation is a must.

  • Cross trained in electrical / instrumentation / mechanical / process disciplines is essential.

    Position Competencies (must haves for the position) :

Essential Previous Experience:

  • Minimum 7-9 years of experience of process engineering / project management of downstream equipment used in Biopharmaceutical manufacturing including large scale and complex projects involving the integration of multiple systems.

  • Proven track record of having led and successfully executed various complex large scale projects within the DSP area of the biopharmaceutical industry.

  • Experience in design and engineering of process equipment for filtration, separation and purification equipment (direct or tangential flow, filtration, chromatography systems and columns etc.) used in a downstream process.

  • Experience of working on projects in various cultures.

  • Experience of working with outside subcontractors including mechanical fabricators, electronic fabricators, Software designers and automation experts.

  • Experience in qualification activities (FAT/SAT) for process equipment in the biopharmaceutical industry.

  • Direct experience of working in the Biotech industry would be an advantage

  • Proven track record of having executed various complex large scale projects within the DSP area of the biopharmaceutical industry.

  • Leadership experience in a technical Biopharmaceutical environment.

Knowledge & Key Skills:

  • Ability to review and comment customer URS for downstream equipment, and evaluate possible technologies or designs to meet customer requirements.

  • Detailed understanding of filtration separation and purification technologies used in the downstream processing (Direct flow filtration, tangential flow filtration, chromatography)

  • Knowledge and understanding of the current industry guidelines for designing, manufacturing, testing and documenting biopharmaceutical process equipment. (ASME BPE, GAMP, cGMP, ISPE, etc.)

  • Project management experience for the execution of system projects in accordance to the defined specifications, time schedule and cost.

  • Ability and willingness to work in a multinational and interdisciplinary team with a high degree on travelling.

  • Ability to communicate effectively on complex technical / engineering issues at the highest level. Pall internal as well as with the customer.

  • Language skills English are essential.

  • Ability to teach other team members from the key experiences and detailed technical knowhow.

Leadership skills to lead a technical team.
