What you’ll do

Engage in all phases of product development, including concept, documentation, design, prototype, test, supplier interfaces, and manufacturing introduction. This position requires the application of design, engineering, root cause analysis investigation, product testing, data analysis and report writing to resolve and improve product design, process and quality issues.

  • Interface with cross-functional groups and customers for complaint investigations, drive root cause analysis and implement quality and design related improvements.

  • Design of plastic components, assemblies, packaging, tooling and fixtures; analyze and validate tolerances, performance, cost and manufacturability. Source components.

  • Lead designing products to meet their intended use. Ensure performance of engineering analyses (support / coordinate and review FEA, CFD analyses) to aid in making design decisions.

  • Establish performance and functional specifications and requirements, identify critical to quality (CTQ) characteristics with cross-functional department input and VOC information, and ensure all are verifiable

  • Verify product performance against design inputs.

  • Write verification protocols, perform testing, analyze and interpret test data.

  • Adhere to design control requirements including the creation of CAD models, assemblies, drawings, detailed specifications, design verification and validation plans, protocols, and reports

  • Identify, collaborate, and manage outside suppliers on material selection, tool design, manufacturing technologies and specifications for components, subassemblies, and/or finished assemblies

  • Ensuring compliance with Design History File (DHF) and other QMS requirements

  • Procure materials, fabricate functional sub-systems for proof-of-concept evaluations, and confirm feasibility of design

Who you are

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical, Plastics, Bio-Medical or similar engineering or related field with at least 10 years relevant work experience

  • Strong knowledge of plastics and relevant material characteristics, particularly as used in disposable medical devices, or life science or biomedical products.

  • Hands-on experience designing, prototyping, testing, and implementing components and designs.

  • Experience in FEA, CFD and MoldFlow analysis CAE tools.

  • Outstanding communication and writing skills for working with global manufacturing, marketing, and development teams.

  • Experience in New Product Development, Cost Reduction, or part quality improvement

  • Experience with plastic part bonding, heat staking, snap fits, welding, etc

  • Demonstrated analytic approach to problem solving

  • Proficient in SolidWorks or Pro/Engineer, plastic part design and GD&T per ASME Y14.5 standards

  • Flexibility required in a small business environment where multitasking and performing different tasks, including hands on work, is needed to get the job done

  • Self-starter, creative problem solver and solution developer when presented with conflicting requirements, business demands and technical risks/issues

  • Understanding of relevant regulatory and QA guidelines governing single-use plastic components such as Biocompatibility requirements per USP Class VI and USP 87 Cytotoxicity
