Beckman Coulter Diagnostics is proud to work alongside a community of six fellow Diagnostics Companies at Danaher. Together, we’re working at the pace of change to improve patient lives with diagnostic tools that address the world’s biggest health challenges.

The Senior Staff Systems Integration Engineer for Beckman Coulter Diagnostics is responsible for defining and leading the system-level control logic architecture, and for supporting the integration activities and associated development efforts of our next-generation hematology analyzers. This person is an integral member of the New Product Development team comprised of Systems, EE, ME, FW and SW SMEs.

This position is located in Miami, FL with the Hematology Business Unit, and is on-site. At Beckman Coulter, our vision is to relentlessly reimagine healthcare, one diagnosis at a time.

You will work within the Systems Engineering team and report to the Director of Engineering, New Product Development responsible for leading design tasks that create novel hardware, fluidics and electronics, and for integrating these systems, along with reagents and algorithms, into world-class clinical diagnostics analyzers. If you thrive in an amazing, innovation-oriented, challenging role and want to work to build an amazing systems engineering and test organization—read on.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Define the strategy and build the architecture and code which support the hardware control logic and manual/automated workflows of new hematology analyzers.

  • Drive and evaluate resulting system performance, speed and throughput, and identify root causes for system-level issues, latencies and resource conflicts between Hardware, Firmware, Software and Reagents.

  • Contribute to DFMEA, risk management, hazard assessment and design review sessions with Engineering and Systems teams. Analyze outputs and identify HW, FW and SW mitigating solutions to implement adequate risk control measures.

  • Refine system architecture and module dependencies, and implement a comprehensive approach for scripting and programing, to address event handling, error reporting, system recovery, and telemetry data collection and analysis, working along FW and SW engineering teams. Guarantee high quality of technical documentation in alignment with Beckman Coulter’s processes to ensure a successful transition to Manufacturing, and Global Support.

  • Define validation plans and test complex modules and systems, ensuring that components of the system are integrated from low-level HW to top-level UI and function as a whole. Adopt a hands-on approach to troubleshoot engineering prototypes in their successive iterations and releases.

The essential requirements of the job include:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 12+ years minimum direct work experience, or Master’s degree with 10+ years minimum direct work experience in a related Engineering discipline (Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering).

  • Expertise in the design, development, system integration, testing and maturation of Medical Diagnostics / Life Sciences / Analytical / Scientific Instrumentation, or complex systems incorporating a mix of fluidics, electro-mechanical and optical hardware, electronics, firmware, embedded computers and software.

  • Thorough understanding of system architecture and sub-system dependencies, and of risk analysis, mitigation and controls, relating to instrument control logic, dynamic time allocation, hardware synchronization and resource sharing.

  • Demonstrated, relevant experience in the definition, programing and deployment of architecture and strategies for HW/FW/SW event logging, fault prevention and detection, error reporting and handling, user messaging, system recovery and resolution.

  • Proficiency in coding (e.g., Visual Studio, C#, C++, Python), hardware testing and troubleshooting, as well as in simulation, data processing (e.g., MATLAB, Mathcad), root cause analysis and reporting, in order to demonstrate system performance, throughput optimization and risk mitigation effectiveness.

It would be a plus if you also possess skills, experience or knowledge related to:

  • Fluidics, precision liquid handling, automation and associated hardware and sensors.

  • Definition, planning and execution of multi-cycle integration test, risk retirement and characterization activities in an Agile environment against tight schedules and deadlines.

  • Statistical data analysis and reporting software, such as JMP, Minitab, or Excel statistics macros.

  • A proven ability to apply fundamental scientific and engineering principles to evaluate processes and offer practical solutions to technical challenges is also strongly desired.
