The Staff Scientist conducts wet-bench scientific experimentation that advances the basic science of nucleic acids and proteins involved in new IDT genomic applications. The staff scientist is expected to be involved in: planning, executing and communicating status updates on genomics projects. Additional duties include being involved in customer support scientific tasks and participation in external scientific collaborations.
This position is a part of the Enzyme Development team and will be located in Coralville, IA.
The Staff Scientist will characterize recombinant proteins: developing new or modified analytical techniques for assessing internally developed proteins and their suitability in genomics applications, validating those techniques, and transferring appropriate QC tests for in-process production tests to IDTs Bulk Biological Reagents group and for final QC testing by IDT's Custom Quality Control department.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
Characterize protein purity by SDS-PAGE, LC-Mass Spec and analytical HPLC.
Determine protein specific activity and kinetic parameters using UV-Vis absorbance, fluorescence, chemiluminescence, circular dichroism, binding assays or coupled enzymatic assays in vitro.
Design and carry out equivalency studies when commercial proteins are available for benchmarking.
Develop and validate methods for the detection of unwanted contaminating protein activities.
Write up scope of work testing documents, standard operating procedures, train and transfer documents to IDT production and CQC groups.
The essential requirements of the job include:
BS degree (in Biology, Genetics, Chemistry or a related life sciences field) and 10+ years of relevant lab experience, or MS degree and 8+ years of experience, or PhD and 6+ years of experience
Industry experience developing analytical tests to characterize existing and novel proteins designed for use in functional genomics products, and possess a solid knowledge base of protein biochemistry, enzymology and molecular biology.
Proficiency in a variety of PC software programs with strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office required.
Applies statistics for DOE during research and product development activities required.
It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
Previous experience with public speaking preferred
Strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals preferred.
Extensive knowledge of IDT products and product lines preferred.
