A Production Technician ( Mixer) is to have a thorough knowledge of procedures for the preparation of various polymer solutions, post-treatment solutions and wetting agents by combining a range of raw materials and by using different equipment such as weighing vessels, scales, transfer pumps, and associated valves is expected in job execution. Analytical ability to troubleshoot equipment, derive root cause, and implement appropriate corrective action is expected in this position.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Prepares various solutions and wetting agents using written instructions/procedures (production schedule, SWI’s, batch travelers), raw materials and utilizing equipment such as stainless steel weighing vessels, weighing scales, transfer pumps, high shear mixers, reactors and associated valves in order to meet production requirements; Orders, maintains and updates inventory based on computer-based production schedules in order to ensure that a sufficient supply of raw materials are available to meet production requirements; Notifies personnel (e.g., Buyer/Planner, Production Technician, Value Stream Leader) of any problems by using radio, phone (office and/or cell), or e-mail in order to update production schedule and minimize downtime; Inspects raw materials by visually checking for the presence of defects (e.g., clarity, discoloration, particulate contamination, viscosity) in order to identify flawed materials and contaminated mix; Determines the amount of raw materials needed to modify a batch size by performing various mathematical computations (e.g., ratios, conversions), using a calculator when necessary, in order to ensure mix size is correct per customer specifications; Performs readings on a regular basis (e.g., every two hours) on reactor functions using various instruments (e.g., computer, thermocouples, pressure gauges) in order to ascertain that equipment is functioning properly and production run variables are within specifications; Prepares and cleans equipment (e.g., reactors, weighing vessels, transfer pumps, air operated mixers, transfer scoops) for mixing by using solvents, water, and paper towels and by following written procedures (SWI’s, batch travelers) in order to keep the mixing process free of contaminants; Maintains and interprets information from visual displays (computers and gauges) and written procedures (SWI’s, batch travelers) in order to make necessary adjustments to reactors; Troubleshoots equipment and processes (e.g., agitator, mix pump, and vacuum pump malfunctions, weighing errors) by making visual, auditory, and/or olfactory observations of the process, computer displays, and/or the mix, making adjustments (e.g., using computer, gauges), taking corrective action (when needed), and/or notifying appropriate departments/personnel (Production Technician, Production Supervisor, Value Stream Leader, Metrology, Maintenance) in order to maintain proper quantity and quality of product; Operates equipment, tools, and devices by following appropriate regulations and guidelines (e.g., MSDS, OSHA, Environmental Health and Safety manual) in order to eliminate accidents and assure an environmentally and physically safe work place; Performs cleaning and housekeeping duties and disposes of waste material in the mix room area by pressure washing and scrubbing floors and dumping waste material in appropriate containers in accordance with the Waste Management Program and the Environmental Health and Safety Manual in order to maintain a clean, safe, and orderly work area; Tracks and logs chemical usage by performing various calculations (e.g., percentages, addition, division) using a calculator on each mix and recording information on data forms in order to prepare an annual report for the EHS Manager; Documents production batch information (e.g., pound size, part number, batch number) on a monthly basis into the mix room logbook in order to ensure proper record keeping and tracking of batch production runs; Not required but may be trained and licensed in forklift safety and operation; Casts membrane in the lab by obtaining jar samples of mix from the reactor and using various lab equipment (e.g., mini-casting chamber, casting blade, glass plate) in order to generate a membrane sample for testing.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES : Ability to use a variety of precision (e.g., meters, gauges, scales) and non-precision (e.g., ruler, hydrometer, beaker) measuring instruments; Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations (e.g., addition, subtraction, division, ratios) and conversions (e.g., fractions to decimals, English to metric, percentages to pounds); Ability to climb ladders (up to 30 feet high) and staircases while carrying tools and measuring devices; Knowledge of appropriate safety and environmental guidelines, waste handling procedures, and personal protection equipment (e.g., those included in safety manual) as identified in MSDS and other manuals; Ability to read, comprehend and follow complex verbal and written instructions (e.g., SWI’s, MSDS) and attend to detail; Knowledge of mechanical principles (e.g., torque, flow, PSI), terminology, and equipment; Ability to communicate, assist, and interact well with co-workers (in and out of the department) in a team-based work environment; Ability to work with certain chemicals and solvents such as resins, acetone, alcohol, DMF, NMP, Methylacetate); Ability to use equipment (e.g., hand trucks, dolly’s) to move 700 lb drums on a regular basis and lift between 55-100 pounds waist high (e.g., resin bags, chemical adds); Ability to identify, communicate, and implement specific areas for continuous improvement; Ability to perform work independently with minimal supervision. Work duties will be determined by reviewing manufacturing schedules and determining sequence of events required to support production; Ability to perform operations while standing and walking for an extended period of time (e.g., 10-12 hours) and stoop and bend (e.g., 60% of the time) to maintain equipment and product; Knowledge of basic computer terminology, operations, and software programs (e.g., Word, Access, Outlook, SPC, QA, automatic process control programs); Knowledge of physical and environmental properties (e.g., humidity, temperature, pressure) and their impact on mix solutions; Ability to properly select and use a variety of hand tools and measuring devices (e.g., screwdrivers, meters, wrenches, pliers, gauges, scales) to maintain equipment.
