Our SLS Laboratory is looking forward to welcome a

Associate Scientist - Analytical Chemistry


Position Objective:

This is a unique chance to work for a large and dynamic global organisation. An opportunity has now become available for an Analytical Chemist to join the Validation Laboratory team in Portsmouth. In this role you will have responsibility for laboratory projects. Generation of test data to specified protocols. You need to be proficient in laboratory techniques and measurement methods including Molecular Spectroscopy, Electrochemistry, Gravimetry and Titrimetry. You will play a key role in our SLS Lab team supporting our customers in the Biopharmaceutical industry who use Pall products in the sterile filtration of their drug products.

In this role the Associate Scientist will:

Test work

Perform routine assignments with guidance and direction from others. Write test reports.

• Test preparation

o Review job request, relevant MSDS and fully understand requirements in accordance with laboratory SOPs

o Determine availability of required equipment and materials – prepare or order required materials

o Review timelines and discuss schedule conflicts or modifications with laboratory management (and project manager, where necessary)

o Document preparation appropriately using datasheets or laboratory notebooks

• Performing test

o Assemble test apparatus

o Correctly operate, understand and be able to troubleshoot all equipment/instrumentation necessary to support testing

o Perform test work according to laboratory request requirements. Record raw data directly onto datasheets or into laboratory notebook. Immediately notify laboratory management of any test delays, problems or deviations

• Test completion

o Disassemble and clean test equipment and work area

o Record any remaining test information

o Create an accurate and timely laboratory report reflective of the laboratory request requirements. Report hours spent on project

Responsibilities specific to Analytical laboratory

Supporting activities

o Understand how various laboratory systems (including purchasing, calibration, and materials inventory) are maintained. Responsibility for maintenance of such a system may be assigned

o Assist with general laboratory housekeeping

o Develop technical contribution

o Attend training courses as required

o Follow assigned work schedule and meet expected target dates

o Attend customer audits as required


The successful applicant will have:

· Degree or equivalent in Science/Engineering or the equivalent work experience that provides knowledge and exposure to fundamental theories and concepts.

· Use existing procedures to solve standard problems; analyse information and standard practices to make judgements

· Knowledge of fundamental laboratory techniques and measurement methods;methods including Molecular Spectroscopy, Electrochemistry, Gravimetry and Titrimetry

· Exchange straightforward information, ask questions and check for understanding

· Practical ability to perform test work and execute work instructions

· Good written and verbal communication

· Conversant with PC based programmes
