The Associate Scientist - FIT is responsible for planning, executing, and discussing experiments that drive product development and sustainment. As an Associate Scientist, the employee has opportunities to learn Cepheid integrated platforms and technology with the goal of developing infectious disease tests to meet existing and emerging customer needs. Being a member of the Fast Impact Team (FIT), this role will execute activities that are in support of new product development (NPD) and business continuity strategies to ensure product availability and quality as demand increases in the market. Essentially, the FIT is an agile group of SMEs that can drop into a product family and develop, troubleshoot, or support post-launch investigations.
This position is part of the Biotechnology R&D, Infectious Disease department and is located in Sunnyvale, CA. Our goal as a department, and as an overall organization is to understand the needs of our customers and to respond with accessible molecular diagnostic test systems as tools to improve the health and integrity of all communities. Our department is responsible for the active design of these systems with guidance from our leadership and multidisciplinary (i.e. interdepartmental) project core teams.
In this role, you will be responsible for the following:
Supporting new product development.
Timely support for NPD study completion (e.g. assisting in efforts to finish design input requirement (DIR) testing for on-time delivery).
Prioritizing urgent – high priority requests for support in order to provide an actionable path forward to address innovative improvements.
Supporting design changes to existing product families
Planning and executing experiments (e.g. LoD, inclusivity/exclusivity/interfering substances) to evaluate impact of design changes
Troubleshooting experimental outcomes and their relationship to the design change
Supporting end of life (EOL) or secondary vendor sourcing.
Develop test methods for qualification of new materials for use in new and existing product families, including transfer of verified test method to other groups for sustained support.
Creating contingency plans to de-risk dependence on single sources for product materials.
The essential requirements of the job include:
Education and related work experience in Biological Science field (e.g. Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Chemistry or Biology)
Bachelor’s degree in Biological Science field with 2+ years of related work experience OR
Master’s degree in Biological Science field with 0-2 years related work experience
Experience working with microorganisms involved in infectious diseases.
Experienced in interpreting and analyzing large scale experimental data as well as results from clinical trials.
Real time PCR or RT-PCR and product development experience.
Experience in handling clinical specimens and be able to work in a BSL-2 environment.
It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
Demonstrated individual and team accountability within an NPD team that has successfully launched an FDA cleared molecular diagnostic test.
Experience with enzyme production and evaluation
Experience with design of experiments (DOE) methods.
Developing data analysis tools that are integrated with a compliable database.
Experienced use in bioinformatic tools to assist in DOE, and clinical study design. Programs that we may use are:
