The Director, Plastics Supplier Engineering will lead Cepheid’s Sunnyvale Plastics Supplier Engineering group and will work closely with external plastic injection molding suppliers/CMs, commodity business managers, operations, quality, and engineering to establish and implement the most effective supplier development plan and strategies. This role is accountable for supplier management and monitoring, including performance, on time delivery, quality, yield, lead time, and capacity. This role will also be responsible for engaging with key stakeholders in the new product introduction teams to plan and transfer new tools and process/design related changes at suppliers and or contract manufacturers.
The Director, Supplier Engineering is expected to embrace and lead through Danaher Business System practices (Lean / Six Sigma) and thrive in a cross-functional, matrix environment where continuous improvement is the cultural norm. Must be comfortable leading through influence and be a capable communicator inside the company and with external partners.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
Lead and develop a team of Supplier Development engineers/managers, growing and mentoring them to support a multi-billion-dollar business.
Be responsible for permanent improvement of external supply quality including yield, process and design improvements
Monitor suppliers' performance through KPIs, SPC and preventative measures.
Create standard work to evaluate technical capabilities, process audits at supplier sites and qualify suppliers based on selection criteria. Provide feedback and update internal supplier selection and qualification processes.
Guide suppliers on non-conformities and root-cause analysis. Coordinate change control activities for purchased goods and services.
Work closely across Supplier Quality, Quality Assurance, Procurement, R&D and Regulatory Affairs
Identify, quantify, prioritize, and drive supplier improvement projects including supplier recommended design changes to internal engineering teams. Use data analytics to make recommendations and drive VAVE projects (Quality, Cost, Efficiency)
Drive resolution to systemic supply chain issues affecting quality, cost, delivery or lead-time, which may include engagement with sub-tiers in the supply chain.
Drive Cepheid requirements at supplier, while representing supplier capabilities within Cepheid
Review, drive corrective actions, and approve supplier issues (Non-conforming material, corrective action requests, etc.).
Align with Commodity Management and Purchasing leaders to implement global sourcing strategies for the commodities assigned by focusing on lowest total cost of ownership and flexibility through supplier segmentation, development and management.
Engage in the NPI process to ensure timely product releases/improvements and align with the commodity strategies. Monitor performance of new tools during initial “safe launch” period, and escalate to the NPI core team as needed to address any problems
Develop a professional relationship with key suppliers through executive meetings and execution to the defined business metrics.
Demonstrate leadership experience with strong social competence and communications skills
Good knowledge of QMS and ISO 13485, MDD/MDR, ISO 9001 and GMP
Responsible for reviewing tool health, spares, and making recommendations on required repairs/refurbishment
Establish, track, and trend key supplier performance metrics - OEE, FPY, Tool Availability, and SPC
The essential requirements of the job include:
Requires a minimum of Bachelor’s degree with 14+ years of related experience with an Engineering Bachelor of Science degree preferably in Material Science, Industrial engineering or Polymer engineering OR
Master’s/Doctoral degree with 12+ years of related experience.
4+ years managing people
The preferred requirements of the job include:
Master’s degree (business or technical)
Demonstrated technical and analytical ability with high degree of professional acumen.
Demonstrated experience in Injection molding & tooling development
Demonstrated experience with equipment selection, operation, and processing
Demonstrated failure analysis experience with polymer materials
Strong / Concise verbal and written communication skills.
Experienced and comfortable with executive level presentations (.ppt / “elevator pitches”).
Familiar with ISO and GMPMD requirements.
Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Power Point, Agile, and SAP
Ability to read and interpret product Bill of Materials (BOM's)
Ability to work at Supplier sites and office environment.
Some travel domestically and internationally is required (25%)
