The Manager, New Product Development is responsible for setting the vision and the mission of the new product development team within the Mechanical Engineering organization. Manage a team to guide and provide technical guidance to support New Product portfolio. Drive team to develop and successfully release sophisticated diagnostics systems! They will work side-by-side cross-functionally to design and develop molecular diagnostic platforms. Build technical depth in the organization and will ensure the design output meets DFX (Manufacturability, Serviceability, and Reliability) requirements.

This position is part of the Hardware Systems Engineering group which is part of larger team comprised of mechanical, electrical and optical engineers and will be located in Sunnyvale, CA.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Build, lead, and provide mentorship to a team responsible for instrument mechanical designs - machined and molded parts.

  • Develop team objectives, aligning Product roadmap and overall departmental vision. Establish plans to build a team in the relevant field though growing, upskilling, and acquiring strong talent.

  • Define clear ownership and instill best engineering practices including using simulation tools (FEA, CFD), conducting tolerance stack up analysis to ensure design iterations are well understood.

  • Define engineering strategy to align with department visions to partner with technology development team to define instrument technology.

  • Participate and lead elements that define product development process and establish checklist for transitioning product designs into NPI and contract manufacturing.

The essential requirements of the job include:

  • Bachelor's degree with 9+ years’ experience OR Master's with 7+ years’ experience in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field and two (2) years of experience managing team including performance management.

  • Experience managing a team thru all phases of product development lifecycle including design, implementation, verification & validation testing, qualification, and transfer to manufacturing.

  • Experience in supporting mechanism development and knowledge of various types of motors, encoders, sensors, and drivetrain-related components such as gears, lead screws, splines, cams, linear guides, belts & pulleys.

  • Advanced experience designing parts and sub-assemblies that are fabricated by common manufacturing processes such as machining, sheet metal, casting, injection molding, and 3D printing.

  • Experience with designing hardware products in ISO, FDA, or other regulated industry; comfortable with concepts of design input, design output, traceability, and risk analysis.

  • Intermediate experience designing assemblies with electrical systems and apparatus, such as electric motors, sensors, LED, machinery controls, PCBA, cable harness, touch screen, LCD, and battery.

  • Experience in contract manufacturer product transfer, and medical/Biotech industry.

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

  • Experience in project/program management in sophisticated product development.

  • Experience with NPD process, and Design Control process Experience of medical regulatory process.

  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment and/or within manufacturing operations under cGMP, ISO and FDA regulations.
