POSITION SUMMARY:

As a Scientist in the Biotechnology group, you will be involved in the development of new core technologies. The successful candidate will join a fast-paced team focused on implementing new amplification chemistries. The Scientist will plan, conduct and summarize experimental results in support of advancing new capabilities. The applicant should have experience developing molecular diagnostic assays with demonstrated technical proficiency in molecular biology techniques. The role will include bioanalytical characterization studies to generate product/process knowledge. The individual will be based in Sunnyvale, California. Scientist in Sunnyvale are at the forefront of a diverse array of innovations, technologies, and new product developments. ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Employ a variety of techniques to systematically analyze amplification products. Techniques might include, post-amplification electrophoretic techniques with high resolution, and fluorescent, colorimetric, nucleolytic, or unique tag approaches that allow qualitative or quantitative assessment of reaction steps.

  • Design, execute and analyze results of experiments both independently and in collaboration with team members.

  • Develop new analytical approaches to drive the development of the new technology.

  • Analyze data using statistical tools such as Minitab, JMP or GraphPad.

  • Participate in DoE designing, planning, execution and analysis for formulation development and assay optimization.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience:

  • Doctoral degree in field with 0-2 years of related work experience OR

  • Master’s degree in field with 3+ years of related work experience OR

  • Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of related work experience OR

  • Post-doctoral and/or relevant industry experience

Knowledge and skills:

  • Demonstrated knowledge in the development of molecular assays.

  • Experienced based understanding of nucleic acid amplification reaction chemistry used in PCR, RT-PCR and isothermal technologies.

  • Ability to identify the need for new analytical methodologies, and proven ability to develop and integrate new analytical tools (e.g., optical or electrophoretic) in alignment with desired outcome.

  • Experience with an array of molecular biology techniques, hybridization experiments, nucleic acid isolation and manipulation.

Physical requirements/abilities:

  • Ability to work in a BSL-2 laboratory environment

  • Must be able to perform routine laboratory tasks. Work may involve repetitive arm/wrist motions.

Other:

  • When it is safe to travel, some travel (20% or less) is expected between our Sunnyvale, CA, Bothell, WA, and Solna, Sweden, locations as well as external collaborators as needed.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

  • Previous experience designing and performing mechanistic studies related to molecular assays.

    • A highly desired background in various isothermal amplification strategies is a plus.
  • Competent with designing primers and probes for nucleic amplification detection approaches (isothermal, PCR and RT-PCR) in order to achieve a high level of multiplexing with ultra-fast detection.

As part of Cepheid’s Biosafety and Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan, any associate who will be working with biohazardous materials, or those who are required to work where others are using biohazardous materials, will be required to show proof of Hepatitis B Vaccination and pass a biosafety training series. For associates who are not vaccinated at time of hire, Cepheid will schedule Hepatitis B vaccination with our occupational health clinic at Cepheid’s expense. The employee will be allowed to enter the labs following the first vaccine dose.

Lab work in a BSL-2 environment is a core element of this position; any person hired must either have proof of Hepatitis B vaccination or plan on being vaccinated at Cepheid’s expense. There may be other vaccines as required.
