Cepheid is seeking a Scientist/Sr. Scientist to fill a critical role in developing a new core technology for the detection of DNA and RNA targets. The candidate should have extensive experience designing molecular assays. An emphasis will be placed on new amplification chemistries, requiring mechanistic studies, allowing the enablement of a novel approach to isothermal and/or PCR amplification schemes. Innovations may cover all aspects of assay chemistry performance, and of particular significance is the enhancement in a reduction in time-to-result, increased performance for limit of detection, and multiplexing. This position will join Cepheid’s growing centers of excellence for assay development and molecular chemistries. The individual will collaborate closely with R&D scientists at both Sunnyvale, CA, and the Bothell, WA locations as well as Cepheid’s Solna, Sweden, site. Scientists at the Bothell site are a dynamic group of research scientists pushing forward the vanguard of sample preparation chemistries, modified oligonucleotides, and enzymology—a potent mix of all the critical components for developing new assay chemistries. Scientists in Sunnyvale are at the forefront of a diverse array of innovative technologies, and new product developments. This position will leverage the strengths of scientists at all sites, while still collaborating with consumables and systems engineers.
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Identify critical mechanistic amplification steps and design associated analytical strategies for testing.
Troubleshoot amplification pathways, analytical testing systems, and redesign as needed to assess and optimize the new core technology.
Support functional characterization of new enzymes and enzyme modifications to improve assay performance for detection of DNA and RNA analytes.
Invent new approaches to ultra-rapid sample preparation without compromising assay performance.
Design and optimize assay conditions to achieve commercial levels of stability, robustness, and performance.
Education and Experience:
Doctoral degree in field with 3+ years of related work experience OR
Master’s degree in field with 6+ years of related work experience OR
Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of related work experience OR
Post-doctoral and/or relevant industry experience
Knowledge and skills:
Demonstrated experience designing analytical approaches to study amplification or chemical incorporation mechanisms.
Must have a strong background designing, developing, and optimizing nucleic acid amplification strategies for isothermal amplification and/or PCR/RT-PCR, from initial screening through validation on clinical samples.
Broad experience developing assays using isothermal amplification technologies (SDA, HDA/RPA, TMA, etc.) is a highly desired skill set.
Experience with enzymatic activities covering many aspects of molecular biology including, but not limited to polymerases, nucleases and other nucleic acid modifying enzymes.
Working knowledge of strategies to neutralize reaction inhibitors in biological samples.
- Must be able to perform routine laboratory tasks. Work may involve repetitive arm/wrist motions.
- When it is safe to travel, some travel (20% or less) is expected between our Sunnyvale, CA, Bothell, WA, and Solna, Sweden, locations as well as external collaborators as needed.
In alignment with the high complex nature of the work, an in-depth background in designing and studying amplification chemistries from a mechanistic aspect is critical.
Hands-on experience in optimization of formulations that impart stability and robustness of new technologies targeted for fast nucleic acid amplification (isothermal, PCR/RT-PCR) reagents.
Highly competent with designing nucleic amplification detection approaches (isothermal and thermal) in order to achieve a high level of multiplexing with ultra-fast detection.
