The Senior Optical Engineer will independently lead the design of new optical systems and or subsystems and provide high level technical knowledge of optical system. This position will work cross-functionally with other related disciplines including Consumables Engineering, Assay Development, and Chemistry as well systems (Mechanical, Electrical) to help troubleshoot existing system issues, and provide technical guidance as needed.
You will be relied upon as a key hands-on specialist in a fast-paced team that is sustaining bestselling generation instrumentation, as well as at an architectural level developing next generation instrument platforms and lab automation systems.
This position is part of the Optical team and located in Sunnyvale, CA. It is part of larger team comprised of mechanical, electrical and optical engineers focused on the common goal of developing and commercializing Cepheid’s world impacting molecular diagnostic platforms.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
Design new optical system or optical sub-systems, including ray trace modeling, computation, and other standard optical engineering methodologies. Work multi-functionally with hardware, firmware, and fellow optical engineers to build and test new instrumentation and systems
Design, prototype, and document high-throughput functional test fixtures of optical subassemblies Perform maintenance and update of product functional specifications with supporting documentation Specify, document, procure, qualify, and implement test fixtures
Support prototype / production builds and resolve technical and quality issues. Evaluate and select suppliers for LED and filter parts; Help resolve supplier quality issues. Resolve and incorporate critical feature inspection and test checkpoints into manufacturing and production process
Ability to analyze problems (troubleshooting, fault isolation, repair, modification, or redesign) of company products using knowledge of engineering to include R&D and production-level applications; skilled in Solidworks and Zemax modeling
Data analysis using MiniTab, Origin, Mathematica, Matlab, or equivalent software. Optical modeling using Zemax package.
The essential requirements of the job include:
Advanced degree in Physics, Optical, or Electrical Engineering with a focus in optical methods, Bachelor’s degree with 6+ years of related work experience OR Master’s degree in field with 5+ years of related work experience OR Doctoral degree in field with 2+ years of work experience; 5+ Hands-on lab experience in working with optical components and systems
Experience in diagnostics, medical device, life sciences or biotechnology industry. Understanding of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a plus
Product development experience in Optical Sciences including fiber optics, physical optics, photo/low level signal detection systems, and lasers
Experience with NPI process and Design Control process to include procurement, fabrication and inspecting of micro-optics components, optical materials (adhesives, matching compounds, etc.) in a product development manufacturing environment.
Experience specifying and selecting LED, filter, and detector components, optics, and optical bench components as well as electronics associated with l and electrical test equipment
Capable of performing calculations of end-to-end light throughput for complete optical systems, and lens design experience using ray tracing simulation Basic machining/mechanical fabrication skills a plus
It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
- Experience working in environments following FDA Good Manufacturing Practices, QSR, and ISO 13485 with strong understanding of statistics, Design of Experimentation (DOE), the Six Sigma method, and Risk analysis (FMEA, Cause and Effect, Fishbone Diagram)
