The Sr Engineering technician is responsible the procurement and assembly of test fixtures, hardware sub-assemblies & instruments, and consumable/fluidic devices in support of engineering Innovation, Research, and Development projects.
This position is part of the Innovation Organization and will be located in Sunnyvale, CA. Innovation evaluates new technologies to ensure Cepheid continues to provide best in class diagnostics.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
Planning, execution, analysis, and reporting of laboratory experiments in addition to associated administrative tasks.
In this hands-on, independent bench-level role you will also work with Innovation, Engineering, Systems Integration, and other interdisciplinary groups to support experiments on various prototype instrument components/systems and fluidic consumables for in vitro diagnostic product R&D activities.
This highly cross-disciplinary engineering role will involve building, reworking, and de-bugging optical, mechanical, electrical, and fluidic components and will require knowledge of mechanical fabrication (injection-molding, casting, sheet metal, machining), electrical fabrication (PCBs, motors, analog and digital circuits, wiring harnesses, flex cables), optical fabrication (LEDs, laser diodes, lenses, filters) and thermal fabrication (resistive heaters, TECs, heat sinks, thermistors, thermocouples).
The essential requirements of the job include:
Perform hardware/instrument/system fabrication and assembly activities, including modification of existing designs and occasional design of new components as required
Perform consumable/fluidic fabrication and assembly activities, including modification of existing designs and occasional design of new components as required
Perform hands-on laboratory work in both engineering/instrument labs and biology/chemistry labs to test and debug systems and components
Work autonomously with outside suppliers and fabricators (including other Cepheid locations/teams) to procure required components or sub-assemblies; ensure quality of the received components
Work independently/autonomously with little or no day-to-day supervision to execute on tasks and projects
It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
Working knowledge of CAD/Mechanical Design (SolidWorks preferred)
Working knowledge of Matlab as applied to data reduction and analysis
Familiar with embedded systems and programming languages (i.e., Arduino, PSoC, LaunchPad, Nucleo)
