This Sr. Project Engineer position is a technical role at the intersection of science/engineering and business. Versatility, creativity, initiative, critical thinking, and leadership skills are crucial to this role in which you will lead projects to implement design and/or process changes that improve business metrics such as quality, cost, and efficiency. Projects will vary; you may work with materials such as base chemicals, complex molecules such as enzymes or oligonucleotides, or filters and plastics used in the assay cartridge. Projects might also entail development, validation and implementation of new manufacturing processes.

This position affords the opportunity to achieve and be credited for quantifiable financial results and improvement of other key business metrics through execution and leadership of projects. Additionally, this role has the benefit of maximum flexibility in work location and can be permanently hybrid (remote / onsite), with a strong bias toward affording the opportunity to work remotely when onsite presence is not required to perform job functions.

Primary Responsibilities of the job include:

  • Evaluate reagents, consumables, and their manufacturing processes in the context of functional applications in Cepheid assays to see opportunities; quantify, prioritize, and drive improvement / redesign projects.

  • Work with finance to assess project value and return on investment and create project feasibility

  • Be a champion for change by advocating for design or process improvements

  • Use data analytics to make recommendations on actions

  • Advocate for projects / change implementations across technical subfunctions

  • Build and lead multi-functional teams through the execution of technical projects

  • Create project plans and timelines

  • Proactively identify and mitigate potential roadblocks or causes of delays

  • Lead / direct risk assessments, e.g. FMEA analyses

  • Lead the design and execution of feasibility studies for new designs / materials / processes

  • Prepare and present / lead design reviews

  • Drive qualification and validation activities

  • This position will require some travel (5-10% maximum), including international travel once pandemic conditions allow

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Degree in a Life Science or Engineering Field with the corresponding level of experience: B.S. with ≥5 years, M.S. or Ph.D. with ≥3 years

  • Understanding of PCR and molecular diagnostic assays

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to think critically and act independently in finding and implementing solutions to complex problems

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Experience planning and completing projects with multi-function teams

  • Highly organization and attentiveness to detail

  • High degree of professional savvy; can work well with other internal functional groups and external suppliers

  • Demonstrated technical and analytical ability.

  • Understanding of manufacturing processes and controls related to area of expertise

The essential requirements of the job include:

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering or Program Management with demonstrated ability or Masters Degree with seven years of confirmed experience

  • Confirmed ability in process management in service operation

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience working in an FDA-regulated environment

  • Graduate level degree in biochemistry, chemical engineering, or biomedical engineering

  • Experience with PCR and Molecular Diagnostic Assays

  • Programming skills; familiarity with programming languages such as Python

Physical Demands of this Position:

  • Willingness to work in BSL lab

  • Ability to work onsite when needed in an office environment (however this role affords a high level of flexibility and will be hybrid remote / onsite)

  • BSL lab access depends upon Hepatitis B vaccination; it is required to either provide documented evidence of vaccination or willing and able to be vaccinated
