Danaher Corporation Staff Systems Engineer in Sunnyvale, California

POSITION SUMMARY:

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Staff Systems Engineer to support ongoing design and development efforts within Cepheid’s diagnostic platforms. A successful individual in this role will utilize technical knowledge, experience, and engineering tools and methodologies to bridge the gap across functional teams and connect critical elements, including Software, Firmware, Hardware, Consumables, Assays, and Optics. This role will integrate into ongoing projects to act as the hub of product development, defining the direction of performance requirements, interfaces, subsystem trade-offs, and traceability of design control requirements. You will be a critical player in a fast-paced team that is sustaining current bestselling generation instrumentation, and at an architectural level, developing next generation diagnostic instrument platforms and lab automation systems. This is a Senior level role within the Systems Architecture team, which is part of a larger Systems Engineering organization comprised of Systems Integration, Verification, and Reliability engineers passionate about the common goal of developing and commercializing Cepheid’s world impacting molecular diagnostic platforms.

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Defines and drives system and subsystem level requirements and architectural decisions

  • Delivers tried analytical/experimental problem-solving skills to understand hardware, software, reagents and consumables issues and quickly analyzes and resolves system inter-operability problems

  • Leads cross-functional teams in the selection, implementation, and integration of requirements traceability systems and processes for ongoing complex product development projects

  • Must demonstrate leadership, drive, and initiative to deliver clear business outcomes; lead and mentor team members while driving activities within and across functional groups

  • Acts as the System Owner for projects in new product development

  • Owns and manages system requirements

  • Works cross-functionally with design teams to develop subsystem requirements and ensure that requirements are met

  • Applies a customer-centric mindset to continuously pressure test the design with the end user in mind; works with Marketing and customer-facing teams to utilize VOC with the goal of continuously improving the customer experience

  • Utilizes modeling tools and methods to drive the understanding of system interfaces; uses simulation and data analysis to bolster our understanding of the system

  • Supports Bio R&D core team activities related to assay optimization, fluidics development, assay integration, and troubleshooting and failure analysis

  • Provides technical expertise across Systems Engineering and cross-functional project teams to support development and submission objectives

  • Participates in data and design reviews to ensure sound decision-making

  • Supports the creation and management of Risk Analysis deliverables and system FMEAs

  • Leads a cross-functional team comprising junior and senior engineers with diverse skill sets (Mechanical, Electrical, Optical, Firmware) to design, test, and validate new highly multiplexed instrumentation platforms, ensuring performance and compatibility with assay products

  • Maintains internal knowledge base of the GeneXpert product hardware, software, consumables, reagents, and fluidics design and performance history as well as cross-functional implementation of design rules

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education and Experience (in years):

  • Minimum of a BS in an engineering discipline, e.g., Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering. Graduate degree strongly preferred

  • 10+ years of relevant industry experience

  • Additional training, coursework, or certifications in Systems Engineering or Systems Design a plus

  • Medical device and/or in vitro Diagnostic product launch experience a must

Knowledge and skills:

  • Familiarity with requirements management tools is strongly preferred

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills are a must

  • Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills

  • Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams

  • Strong working knowledge of experimental techniques and statistical analysis

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with design of experiments (DoE)

  • Experience with NPI process, DfX, Design Control process

  • Experience with Data analysis using Minitab, Origin, Mathematica, Matlab, or equivalent software.

  • Experience in the development or optimization of sample preparation, real time PCR and RT-PCR assays strongly preferred

  • Programming experience in C/C++, Python, or other
