The Mechanical Engineer - Microbiology for Beckman Coulter Diagnostics is responsible for driving design changes of components, sub-systems, products, peripherals, and consumables to support production OTD, and continuous improvements of the customer experience, including:

• Design change assessments to support component obsolescence, direct material cost reduction and other value-engineering solutions, vendor and assembly quality and non-conformance, product and manufacturing reliability and quality.

• Coordinating and managing projects within the team and across functions. Reporting status and issues at daily management meetings.

This position is part of the Microbiology business unit within Beckman Coulter located in West Sacramento, CA and will be a hybrid role with a maximum of 2-3 days onsite/week. In this position, you will be an integral part of the Instrument / Hardware R&D team and report to the Sr Manager, Hardware Development for Microbiology. In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Execute and approve design changes to support production and overall product quality

  • Prepare, execute, and author reports on engineering studies.

  • Collaborate with and propose manufacturing operating procedures and specifications to accommodate new product line implementation or update current manufacturing process.

  • Lead technical investigations to the root cause and triage the countermeasures for cost, quality and lead-time issues to the appropriate function.

Build process muscle through Kaizen and robust Problem Solving to Improve local and global procedures that impact your work area.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (ME, EE or SE), with 2+ years of proven product development, VAVE, and sustainment experience or a master’s degree.

  • Work experience should include cross-functional process development and project coordination/management experience with excellent written and spoken communication skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively and autonomously, representing R&D in a hybrid work model.

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

  • Medical device or other regulated design-control systems

  • Document/Design Change management via PLM/PDM systems (SolidWorks and Enovia preferred)

  • Sustaining product compliance to EMC, PEC, and other regulatory requirements (IVDR, RoHS, etc)

  • Project planning and estimating that considers cross-functional and cross-site efforts.

  • Understanding of Danaher Business System/Lean/Kaizen/Value Stream Mapping/Design Change

  • Participation in Visual Project Management and Daily Management
