The Sr. Director, Research & Development – Microbiology for Beckman Coulter is responsible for strategic leadership of new product development and sustainment within our Microbiology business! Based in Sacramento, CA in a hybrid capacity, this role will be a part of the Microbiology senior leadership team and report to the President of the business. Successful leaders in this role collaborate closely with business leadership to drive operational excellence.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Be the strategic and operational leader of R&D, providing technical and organizational leadership

  • Develop strong differentiated product roadmaps in conjunction with other business leaders

  • Ensure delivery of agreed NPI roadmaps within time, cost and quality standards; applying Danaher Business System (DBS) tools to drive effective sustainable processes and problem solving

  • Relentlessly focus on attracting and developing talent, building organizational capability and strong, diverse R&D teams

  • Identify and lead large-scale transformation initiatives

  • Act as cross-functional champion between Program Management, Product Management, Regulatory Affairs, Quality Assurance, commercial sales, Clinical Affairs, Operations and R&D teams.

  • Actively search for best-in-class technologies to support and develop the innovation roadmap

  • Partner closely with our intellectual property (IP) team to proactively implement an IP strategy, including patent rights and trade secret protection, for new and future products

  • Be accountable for our R&D budget planning and management

Essential Experience and Qualifications

  • Masters’ Degree or higher in engineering, life sciences, or related field with 16+ years of experience – Includes 6+ years leading people.

  • Significant experience in R&D/product development in a regulated medical device field and global approach including leading mixed hardware, assay/reagent, software development, and data science capabilities

  • Proven track record of product development under design control and medical device directives, product development strategy & leading concurrent NPI projects of varying complexities

  • An innovation mentality, with passion and demonstrated ability to drive culture change through innovation and creative problem solving

  • High energy, “get things done” person with proven track record in leading transformation and building strong delivery focused R&D teams

  • Proactive and data-driven decision maker; results and delivery oriented; ability to perform under pressure

  • Upbeat and proactive leader with sufficient gravitas to influence across the organization, build key relationships at all levels, inspire change and empower others

  • Excellent communication skills, attention to detail, problem solving skills, and the ability to deal with complexity

  • Travel may be required up to 25% of time

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

  • Prior Invitro diagnostics experience preferred

  • Experience with augmented reality solutions is a plus
