Job Description

The Accelerator Process Development group at Pall specializes in designing, optimizing, and transferring scalable processes from pre-clinical to manufacturing scale. As a scientist within the Accelerator Process Development Services team, you will work within a highly collaborative environment to develop, improve, characterize, and scale up customer processes related to downstream viral vector applications targeting life-saving gene therapies. As a key member of the downstream process development team, the scientist will be responsible for providing technical and scientific support for the development of gene therapy and biologics related processes. The Scientist will interact extensively with clients as well as internal departments including the upstream and analytics teams, R&D, applications R&D, automation etc.

Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

  • Be a primary technical point of contact within PDS, supporting viral vector or biologics process development and tech transfer activities

  • Conduct hands-on laboratory bench work to complete, optimize and troubleshoot downstream processes for viral vectors and biologics

  • Evaluate conditions and parameters for optimizing processes to improve viral vector recovery

  • Maintain expertise in gene therapy or biologics-related downstream processes and equipment

  • Ensure that robust, scalable, commercially viable gene therapy or biologics processes are properly developed.

  • Lead and implement process tech transfer activities

  • Ensure quality, and timeliness of deliverables are maintained

  • Conduct technical investigations and risk assessments related with processes

  • Support generation of SOPs, raw material specifications, batch records and reports

  • Provide process expertise in the resolution of complex technical or operational problems.

  • Perform independent data recording, analysis and troubleshooting.

  • Document work in concise reports and provide project updates in written and oral presentations

  • Implement continuous process improvement aimed at providing robustness, capacity and productivity.

  • Maintain a high level of interaction and collaboration with the upstream and analytics teams.

  • Provide technical support and training to internal and external collaborators.

  • Proactively identify and resolve technical and operational issues.

  • Support internal and external audits.

  • Perform occasional extended hours and weekends to support ongoing lab activities as needed.

  • Mentor and support other junior staff and build a culture of support and collaboration.

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications/Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, molecular biology, biochemistry, or related field.

  • 2+ years of proven experience in a process development or clinical manufacturing laboratory setting.

Experience:

  • Experience in downstream bioprocessing of viral vectors or biologics

  • Experience with downstream purification of biological molecules required, with an in-depth knowledge of depth filtration clarification, chromatography, tangential flow filtration, sterile filtration and virus retaining filtration

  • Pilot scale and/or GMP experience is a plus

  • Demonstrated understanding of the fundamentals and/or modeling of unit operations is a plus.

  • Proven record of successfully planning and carrying out projects and experiments.

  • Ability to work in a Biosafety Level 2, follow safe lab procedures and maintain good laboratory practice (GLP).

  • Experience or knowledge in execution and management of process technical transfer activities

  • Experience or knowledge in the design, modification and optimization of gene therapy or biologics downstream process parameters

  • Proven skills in effectively managing and balancing project assignments with other duties.

  • Great interpersonal and communication skills and willing to work with all levels of the organization and external customers
